Dark circles are one of the most common skin concerns in South Asia — and one of the most misunderstood. Many people try one eye cream after another without results because they are treating the wrong type of dark circle. The first step is to work out what is causing yours.
The Four Main Types of Dark Circles
1. Pigmented (brown) circles
Extra melanin in the skin under the eyes gives a brown or greyish shade. This type is very common in medium and deeper skin tones and often runs in families. Sun exposure and rubbing the eyes make it darker.
2. Vascular (blue or purple) circles
The skin under the eyes is very thin, so blood vessels beneath it can show through as a bluish or purplish tint. Tiredness, allergies and a blocked nose can make it more visible.
3. Structural (shadow) circles
Hollows under the eyes — from your natural bone structure or from loss of volume with age — cast a shadow. These look darker under overhead lighting and lighter when you tilt your face up towards a light.
4. Puffiness
Fluid collecting under the eyes, often worse in the morning, after a salty meal, crying, poor sleep or allergies. Puffiness creates a shadow below it.
Many people have a mix of two or more types.
Everyday Habits That Help
- Sleep: regular, sufficient sleep reduces puffiness and makes vascular circles less noticeable.
- Sun protection: apply sunscreen right up to the under-eye area (carefully) and wear sunglasses outdoors — this is the single most important step for pigmented circles.
- Stop rubbing: rubbing itchy eyes darkens pigment over time. If your eyes itch often, an allergy may be the cause.
- Less salt in the evening and enough water through the day can reduce morning puffiness.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised if you wake up puffy.
- Cold compress: a cool, damp cloth or chilled spoons for a few minutes in the morning temporarily reduces swelling.
Ingredients to Look For
- Vitamin C, niacinamide and tranexamic acid — help fade pigmented circles gradually. Try Mary&May Tranexamic Acid + Glutathione Eye Cream.
- Retinol (in eye-specific formulas) — can strengthen thin under-eye skin over time, which makes vascular circles less visible. Use a product made for the eye area, such as 3W Clinic Collagen Retinol Ball Eye Serum, at night, and start slowly.
- Caffeine — can temporarily tighten and de-puff.
- Hyaluronic acid, peptides and ceramides — hydrate and plump, so fine lines and shadows look softer.
Apply eye products by gently tapping with your ring finger — it uses the least pressure. Browse our dark circle, eye care and eye serum collections.
Do Under-Eye Patches Work?
Hydrogel patches such as Lanbena Vitamin C Eye Patches or Swiss Beauty Hydra Aloe Vera Eye Patches give a quick boost of hydration and a cooling, de-puffing effect — great before an event or a photo. The effect is temporary, so think of them as a treat rather than a long-term treatment.
Makeup Tricks for Instant Results
- Colour correct first: on medium to deep skin tones, a peach or orange corrector neutralises brown and blue-grey circles before concealer.
- Choose concealer close to your skin tone — one or at most half a shade lighter. A much lighter shade can look grey on darker circles.
- Use a little, and tap it in with a fingertip or damp sponge; thick layers crease.
- Hydrate first: a light eye cream underneath stops concealer from settling into lines.

When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if swelling appears suddenly, affects only one eye, is painful or itchy, or comes with redness or vision changes. Persistent puffiness can sometimes be linked to allergies or other health conditions. A dermatologist can also discuss in-clinic treatments for stubborn pigmentation or hollows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can dark circles be removed permanently?
Genetic dark circles usually can't be removed completely with creams, but sun protection, the right ingredients and good habits can make them noticeably lighter over a few months.
Do I really need a separate eye cream?
Not always. A gentle face moisturiser can be used around the eyes. Eye creams are useful when you want a targeted ingredient in a formula designed for thinner, more sensitive skin.
How long until I see results?
For pigmentation-fading ingredients, expect around 8–12 weeks of consistent use. De-puffing effects from cold and caffeine are immediate but temporary.
