Understanding Bangladeshi Hair
Most Bangladeshi women have thick, dark, straight to wavy hair with medium to high porosity. The tropical climate brings specific challenges: excess humidity causes frizz and swelling of the hair shaft, heat damage from styling, scalp issues from sweating, and rapid oxidation of colour-treated hair.
Building Your Hair Care Routine
Cleansing: How Often and Which Shampoo?
In Bangladesh's humid climate, most people need to wash their hair 2–3 times a week. Daily washing can strip natural oils, leading to either a dry, brittle scalp or compensatory oil overproduction.
Choose your shampoo by scalp type:
- Oily scalp: Clarifying or balancing shampoo. Look for salicylic acid or tea tree.
- Dry/damaged hair: Moisturising shampoo with argan oil, keratin, or coconut milk.
- Frizzy hair: Smoothing shampoo with silicones or anti-humidity ingredients.
- Colour-treated: Colour-protecting, sulphate-free shampoo.
- Dandruff: Anti-dandruff with zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole.
Conditioning: The Step Most People Rush
Leave conditioner on for at least 2–3 minutes before rinsing. Apply from mid-shaft to ends only — never on the scalp, which adds unwanted grease.
For very dry or damaged hair, switch to a leave-in conditioner on wash days for extra moisture retention.
Hair Masks: Deep Treatment Weekly
A weekly hair mask provides intensive repair and moisture that regular conditioner can't match. Apply generously to damp hair, cover with a shower cap, wait 20–30 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
Key ingredients to look for:
- Protein repair: Keratin, hydrolysed silk, wheat protein — rebuild damaged hair structure
- Moisture: Argan oil, shea butter, coconut oil
- Scalp care: Tea tree, peppermint, niacinamide
The Power of Hair Oil
Hair oiling is deeply embedded in South Asian beauty traditions — and science now backs many of its benefits. Regular scalp massage with oil increases blood circulation, strengthens the hair follicle, reduces breakage, and adds shine.
Apply 1–2 hours before washing (or overnight for intense nourishment):
- Coconut oil: Penetrates the hair shaft; reduces protein loss; best for most hair types
- Argan oil: Lightweight, anti-frizz, adds shine; great for frizzy or chemically treated hair
- Castor oil: Thick; known for stimulating hair growth; mix with lighter oil for easy application
- Onion oil: Rich in sulphur; excellent for hair fall and scalp health
- Black seed oil: Anti-inflammatory; great for dry, itchy scalps
Serums: The Finishing Touch
A good hair serum applied to damp or dry hair tames frizz, adds shine, and provides heat protection before styling. A small amount (2–3 drops) is all you need from mid-length to ends.
Protecting Hair in Bangladesh's Climate
- Always use a heat protectant spray before any heat styling
- Avoid tight hairstyles that put tension on the scalp
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage
- Cover hair when outdoors in extreme heat — UV rays damage hair just like skin
- Rinse with cool water at the end of your shower to seal the cuticle and boost shine
